Introduction

FLOCKDATA BREEDERS is a comprehensive Windows based software package for flock farmers and hatcheries. It enables detailed information to be recorded for individual flocks as well as enterprises and for performance figures to be compared with targets. The system allows breed standards to be established for data values such as egg production, hatchability, chick production, feed consumption and mortality. The system can be used by a farmer with flocks on several sites or by a hatchery with a number of suppliers supplying eggs to it.

Using the System

The system requires flocks to be set up at the start of the laying period by entering relevant information such as date and age at housing, length of laying period, number of male and female birds housed, breed and initial cost per bird. Not all this information needs to be entered.

Once a flock has been established on the system, information from both the farm and the hatchery can be input. Egg numbers from the poultry shed are recorded in the eggs collected section. Details of mortality, culls and other bird losses are recorded in the losses section. The feed deliveries section records the type and quantity of feed delivered and how it is distributed between sheds. The average weight of male and female birds is recorded in the bodyweight section together with the coefficient of variation and evenness. Data recorded from the hatchery includes age of egg, fertility and chick production. The costs section contains a comprehensive set of flock costing entries which can be customised by the user. Income from hatching eggs and other sources are recorded in the income section. The environment section is used to record data concerning water consumption, lighting, internal and external temperatures, relative humidity and carbon dioxide and ammonia concentrations. The health section includes details of vaccinations, blood tests, salmonella screenings and medications given to flocks. The bin stocks section records the quantity of feed remaining in the bin. Data recorded in each production unit can now be entered into a handheld computer whilst still in the building. The handheld is then taken to the office and the data uploaded to the main database. Further information regarding the handheld module is available on the Handheld page.

Feed prices and bird valuation scales are held centrally by the system rather than on a flock basis. It is not compulsory to input data into every section, it is the decision of the user as to what information is to be entered. All inputs are stored as raw data and can be amended at any time.

Reporting

The program can produce a wide range of outputs in the form of reports, tables and graphs.

Reports can perform calculations based on data from one period or cumulative data from the flock housing date. Outputs can be produced for single flocks or for all flocks in an enterprise. They include a production unit performance summary comparing values with target data, hatchery data with target comparisons, cash flow information, flock health records and details of the production unit environment. The system comes with a forecasting capability that enables forward planning of hatching egg and chick production to be undertaken on a flock or enterprise basis. Other reports include a house stocking schedule and raw data. Flexibility of the reporting capabilities is a feature of the software.

The system has the ability to produce graphs of virtually any data held within the system. The user can decide what to plot and the format of the graph. The graphics module has the capability of plotting data from several flocks and breed standards on the same graph.

Data Files

All data input into Flockdata systems is stored in data files on the hard disk. Should these data files be lost, accidentally deleted or become corrupt then weeks or months of data could be lost. For this reason all Flockdata systems include data backup and restore routines.
