Newport Olympic Gymnastics Club from
In 2008, the club was awarded GymMark
accreditation for excellent work in development, training.and events
programmes, duty of care and child protection, sports equity, ethics and
administration. Accreditation is British
Gymnastics’ endorsement of a quality run gymnastics club. Parents/Carers of children who are members of
a GymMark club can feel confident that their children are enjoying gymnastics
in a “safe, effective and child-friendly” environment.

The Club caters for both girls and boys,
ranging in age from three years up to seventeen. For the younger members there
is a Pre-School group who have lots of fun in activity sessions on a Saturday
afternoon. New members usually come in at beginner level (fitness and fun)
where there are training sessions for both girls and boys aged between five and
ten. If they show or gain the required skills, new members move up to the
improver, development, floor & vault, pre-squad and squad groups. These
groups learn a higher level of skills as artistic gymnasts as defined by the
National Development Plan (NDP) within gymnastics.
At all levels, members are trained end
encouraged to work for awards. At beginner and improver levels these are the
British Gymnastics badges, and at higher level the National Development Plan
grades. Gymnasts also participate in local, regional and national competitions.
Selected squad gymnasts take part in TeamGym competitions. The club has a number of gymnasts (both girls
and boys) who have been accepted into the County Squad.
The Club has a number of qualified
coaching staff many of whom work on a voluntary basis. The boys Head Coach,
Jason Tucker has much experience in gymnastics and represented Wales in the
2002 Commonwealth Games. The coaches are helped by a Management Committee
comprising mainly of parents who wish to become more involved in their
children’s’ activity. Each coaching session is attended by a committee member
co-ordinator to assist in the administration of the club and to answer your
questions.
Being a member of Newport Gym Club
provides young people with an opportunity to become involved in an active sport
at grass roots level, which requires discipline and dedication. Those members
who take their gymnastics seriously and get into the Club Squad not only have
to come to club at least four times a week, but also have to undergo basic
training and conditioning in their own time.
Each year the club holds an awards night.
Sponsored cups and medals are awarded for achievement and effort over the year
at beginner, recreational, junior and senior squad levels in both the girls and
boys sections. The gymnasts also give demonstrations at a number of local shows
and fetes in the area during the summer. The club also likes to get together on
social occasions, such as summer barbeques which both the gymnasts and their
parents enjoy.
